Research and Development of a Pilot Crop

Insurance Program for Silage Sorghum

RMA contracted with Watts and Associates to research and develop a crop insurance plan for silage sorghum. Silage sorghum crop insurance was unavailable in both the Federal Crop Insurance Act and the private sector. RMA had numerous documented requests from producers for such as plan, as did the National Grain Sorghum Producers Association (NGSPA).

The FCIC Board approved the proposed plan in May of 2004. The Silage Sorghum Program will be implemented in 2005 and silage sorghum will be insurable as a separate crop, rather than as a type under the grain sorghum policy, as was the previous method. The program will be offered in 37 counties in central and western Kansas and 2 counties in eastern Colorado (see map).
