Dr. Myles Watts – Lead Actuary and Head of Rating Department


  • Head of the Watts and Associates, Inc. Rating Department;
  • Presidential Nominee and US Senate Approved Member of the Board of Farmer Mac
  • 19 years as Head of the Department of Agricultural Economics and Economics at Montana State University. Responsible for personnel, program, and budget management. Regularly leads multidisciplinary research teams and funding efforts;
  • 30 years as a member of the faculty of Agricultural Economics and Economics at Montana State University providing training on agricultural risk management, econometrics, and macro and micro agricultural economics;
  • Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from the University of Nebraska;
  • Editor of the Journal of Agricultural Resource Economics. Responsible for academic quality of published articles;
  • Numerous publications on range/ranching risk management issues in refereed publications;
  • In excess of 15 years experience as a Principal Investigator in crop insurance policy research, product development, and potential fraud detection. Experienced in leading a team involving economists, data-mining experts, and fraud investigators to develop methods to detect high fraud potential producers, agents, and adjustors;
  • 25 years experience in risk management and agricultural policy research;
  • Founding Board Member, and current Chair, of the International Institute for Agriculture Risk Management;
  • Regular interactions with producer groups and politicians on public policy issues;
  • Over 100 published professional papers and 20 disciplinary-refereed journal articles; and
  • Constructed rating methods for several index-based, weather-based, and satellite-based insurance products currently being developed.
